Please pardon my ignorance, I'm sure many of you already know all about this, but can someone please explain to me what the Flandrau papers are? A cousin sent me a photocopy of a page apparently from the book 'Flandrau Papers: Treasure Trove for Mixed Blood Dakota Indian Genealogy'. No library where I live has this book, but my impression is that this involves Metis people who were being represented by the attorney Flandrau in trying to get their annuities. However, I'm not sure if I understood it correctly.
The page I was sent is a list of names in which my g-grandfather, Francis (Frank) Huot, is number 310. Frank's statement says:
"My mother [Sophia Huot] is still alive located at Grants Pass, Oregon. She was born in Saint Paul some 70 years ago near the mouth of Phalen Creek. I was born at what is now called the city of Prescott Wis. Feb. 8, 1850... My people belonged to Shakopee's band and were in some way related to Wabasha placing Farrabaults, Wells, Prescott & Moizo [Monjeau] family related. My mother was a Moizo. Some of my relatives are living on Grey Cloud Island."
The date given for his statement is 12 April 1898.
If someone could tell me what this list of names is and what it would mean for my g-grandfather to be on it, I would be very grateful. Thank you so much.

I know that you can find a copy of the book at the Minnesota Historical Society's website, Park Books. I had offered my copy for copying and dont have it at this time, so I am not able to give details. It seemed to me that many of the names that appeared in this book also appeared on the 1889 Mdewakanton in Minnesota McLaughlin Roll, a copy of which is online or on this site. I know that we have some researchers that have a copy and can give some details when they see your post. (Big Jon)

Thank you so much. Here is the Explanation you needed for the flandreau papers..../ it is fromthe Introduction in the book. In addition, I might add that the Sisseton-Wahpetons, Wahpekutes, and Santee Indians, as well as those still living in Minnesota all received a share of the Settlement awarded by the US Ccourt of Claims. The Mc <laughlin Roll of 1917 is a listing of those that received payment from this settlement.

Thanks ever so much. I thought it was something along those lines, but I really wasn't sure. I guess g-grandfather Frank being on this list means he was trying to get an annuity and I'll try the McLaughlin rolls to see if I can find out if he ever did get it.
Thanks again, the people at this site are the greatest.

I tried a quick search but I didn't find the McLaughlin 1917 rolls posted at this site. Are they on here somewhere? If not, is there anyone who could tell me if Frank (Francis) Huot is on it? He was born in 1850 and his Mdewakanton descent comes through his mother, Sophia Moizo [Monjeau]. In his statement in 1898 in the Flandrau papers, he was living in Montana and had two sons, Louis L. and Etol St. Julian. I'm curious to find out if he ever actually got an annuity. thanks for any advice, Sylvia
